FROM THE DEEPEST PART
OF THE CENTURY COMES ALIKI

Tradition
wants us to believe that at the ancient time of the
old Hersonisos (bay), there existed a kingdom with Queen
“Aliki”, but the name of this area has somehow been
altered in its pronounciation.
Behind the houses which are near the shores, we can
still find preserved pieces of an ancient village and
on the east side of the island “ The Bay of Ierihous”
where an ancient religious sanctuary is still preserved
in two partially existing buildings. They were destroyed
in 7th century BC. At this very place in 1886, there
was a Kouros (Colossal statue of adolescent) unearthed,
which is found today in the museum of Istanbul. (5) In Byzantine
times, during the adoration of Christianity , there
was a highly risen natural piece of land which was not
populated, was transformed into a site of worship by
the inhabitants. At this point, somewhere in the 5th
century AC , two basilicas were built using materials
of Sanctuary.
The historic active period of Aliki, was at the same
time of the exile of the marble quarry, which carried
on from the 6th century to the 7th century A.C. There
are clear signs of the existence of a highly populated
city which was called Marble road which led to Limenas,
where still to this day, parts of this city , is preserved
at the areas Petradi and Dermata.. The still existing
marble quarry, at the edge of Hersonisos with the half
finished marble works, shows that a huge marble factory
was abandoned suddenly from the horrible occurrence,
probably of the big earthquake of 365 AC or the one
of 1509 AC

Today,
on which ever part of Aliki you are found standing,
inside or outside of its blue waters, you feel that
you are living in her (Alikis) sunbeaming ancient magnificence,
waiting for the moment inside where you will hear the
sound of iron beating from the ancient marble workers,
and for the Queen of tradition to come out and to treat
you as her most special guest.
